Bhagavad Gita · 2.48 · Balance

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय ।

सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ॥

yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dhanañjaya

siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṃ yoga ucyate

“Do your work from a steady centre, free of clinging, the same in success and failure. That evenness of mind is called yoga.”

Try this today

Before one important task today, take three slow breaths and say: “I'll do my best, and I'll be okay either way.”

Steadiness is yoga

Ask most people what yoga is and they’ll describe a stretch or a pose. The Gita’s definition is different, and much bigger: samatvaṃ yoga ucyate, “evenness is called yoga.”

This verse follows straight after 2.47 (“your right is to the work, not its results”) and tells you how to live that out. Yoga-sthaḥ: be established in yoga, anchored in a steady inner place. Then act.

It’s like a tree in the wind. The branches move, but the roots don’t. You can care deeply, work hard and feel everything, while something at the centre stays calm whether things go your way (siddhi) or not (asiddhi).

That steadiness isn’t coldness. It’s what lets a surgeon operate calmly, a parent respond rather than react, and a student walk into an exam hall without panic.

A family practice: when something goes wrong at home (spilled milk, a lost game), try saying together, “Steady roots!” It’s a small, playful way to practise samatva.
